Achievements

The outstanding achievements of nearly two-decades of activity carried out by the Nagenahiru Foundation (NF) have been appreciated by several national and international institutions. The number of awards received during the recent years is a testimony for this fact. Following awards were received by the NF during the past.

 
‘One World Award’ (2008)
 

Mr. Lal Emmanuel (President   of the Nagenahiru Foundation) and the Nagenahiru Foundation emerged as the Final winner of the first One World Award in 2009.

 
 

Mr. Emmanuel and the Foundation were chosen for the One World Award due to the impressive example they demonstrated on how synergy can be created by working with a holistic concept on all three pillars of sustainability. The Foundation’s work on mangrove and Lake Environment conservation and achievements in providing sustainable livelihoods through a combination of nature conservation and income generation were vital in the nomination for the award. These included organic farming, introduction of alternative energy sources such as solar power, providing economically safe livelihoods to the people, awareness creation etc. It is highlighted that the NF and Lal Emmanuel provided a lot of answers and solutions to burning issues of our times like nature conservation, poverty alleviation and climate change.

The One World Award is an international award aimed to; promote globalisation that is not oriented on profit maximisation, but on the three pillars of sustainability i.e. ecology, social aspects, economical welfare to recognize outstanding engagement and achievements in providing creative and highly effective solutions in the areas of environment protection and fair livelihoods and encourages more involvement for a loveable, liveable future and for peaceful community building.

The One World Award statue along with a prize of 25,000 Euros was presented to Lal Emmanuel on 19th June 2008 at an event held in Modena Italy.
 

‘SEED Award’ 2009

The Nagenahiru Foundation became the Silver Award winner in the SEED Awards 2009 organized by the SEED initiative. SEED Initiative supports entrepreneurs for sustainable development and the awards are dedicated for innovations in the field of renewable energy.

The Foundation was awarded the Silver award for its entrepreneurship and outstanding potential to contribute to sustainable development. Its contribution in solar energy, education and fishing was the key areas for this achievement. The effort to convert widely used traditional kerosene lanterns into solar-powered LED lighting systems was the key endeavour for the selection for this award.

 

The SEED Awards for Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development is an annual international competition designed to support locally-led, innovative, entrepreneurial partnerships in developing countries which have the potential to make real improvements in poverty eradication and environmental sustainability. SEED has a number of prestigious partners, including UNEP, UNDP, IUCN, etc.
   

‘Green Jobs Award’ (2009)

The Foundation received the Green Jobs Award (Haritha Rekiya Sammanaya) offered by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Sri Lanka for its dedicated work in Environment Education and Awareness Creation. The award was received under the institutional sector at an event organized to mark the World Environment Day on 5th June 2009.

The NF was selected for the award due to its determined effort in environmental education and awareness as an institution and its engagement in ‘Green Jobs’ creation through a variety of activities initiated by the Foundation.

The award, initiated in 2009 aims to promote green jobs or environmental

friendly jobs,  that are aimed to protect the environment. The event was organized to recognize and honour persons and organizations that encourage green jobs, a recent advancement in the global environment.
   
 

National Green Job Award Environment Education was presented to Nagenahiru Foundetion by Hon. Minister of Agriculture Maythreepala Sirisena. Hon. Minister of Environment & Natural Resource Patalee Champika Ranawaka also present.
